Thanks to JD for this info - it works - I've tried it 
1 Make sure you have some spare bag weight!!
2 Go to Pots table and click it
3 drag gems to be combined to any of the 4 boxes that appear and release them (make sure you get the right quantity!!!! (see below>>>>>)
4 Gems should automatically go to the 5th right hand side box
5 Click OK
6 The larger gem should appear in your holdings window.
Table for making larger gems:
(Aledgedly - no skill needed and 100% sucess rate!!!)
Diamond - 3 small make a medium - 3 medium make a large (Not tested yet)
Rubys - as diamonds (tested!
)
Sapphires - As diamonds (tested! )
Amithysts - As diamonds ( medium to large not tested yet)
Emeralds - 4 small make a medium - 4 medium make a large (not tested yet)
Jades - 2 small make a medium - 2 medium make a large ( medium to large not tested yet)
